It started on July 8th 1960, when 5 Killaloe residents, Messrs. Hector Newenham, Douglas Brislane, Rodney Shore, Desmond Fitzgerald and Raymond Roche, subscribed Â£5 each to form a club and invited the Irish Sub Aqua Club down to give a shallow water demonstration at the Lakeside Hotel Boat Quay. This signaled the launch of the Killaloe Sub Aqua Club. In addition to the above names, the following should be noted as having later contributed Â£5 to get the club off to a good start: Robin Bogan, Cyril Gleeson, Dermot Foley, Gerry Doyle and Johnnie Ryan.

Concurrently, 5 Limerick lads, all teammates in the cityâ€™s Bohemian Rugby Football Club, Ronnie Hurley, Adrian Clancy, Johnny Ryan, Ray Doyle and Dermot FitzGerald had joined the Curragh Sub Aqua Club and were already diving in the sea.

Later that Summer, Douglas and Joan Brislane, who were, in effect, the only ones of the Killaloe group to have taken up â€œthe challengeâ€ invited the Limerick divers out to Killaloe to a meeting, where a committee was formed with Douglas Brislane as Club Chairman and Ronnie Hurley, the clubâ€™s first Diving Officer.
